It’s been months since one of Netflix’s latest forays into the talk show genre was released but will Norm Macdonald Has a Show buck the trend and become a hit for Netflix? Has it been renewed for season 2? Let’s take a look at what we know.
The talk show which was essentially an interview show which featured guests such as David Spade, Drew Barrymore, David Letterman, Jane Fonda, Lorne Michaels and many more premiered on Netflix in September 2018.
Netflix hasn’t been doing too hot with its talk shows. The Break with Michelle Wolf was canceled, Chelsea went on permanent hiatus and even the Joel McHale show was canceled too.
Bucking that trend so far has been Hasan Minhaj which is seeing its fourth volume arrive in August.
Has Norm Macdonald Has a Show been renewed for season 2?
Official renewal status: Canceled (last updated: 07/09/2019)
The show’s future has yet to be officially announced but given the fact we’ll soon be coming up on a year since the show released, it may be unlikely we see it return.
Further evidence of this came from a recent article in the NYTimes discussing Netflix’s struggle with producing talk shows that convert into viewers.
David Letterman who serves as an executive producer on Norm MacDonald’s show (and also has his own standalone show too) spoke about his meeting with Ted Sarandos.
Specifically, they said that the show had “not met expectations” adding:
“I remember saying to Ted Sarandos, after all of Norm’s shows had been produced, I said, ‘Boy, I think you guys really got something here,’” Mr. Letterman said. After a pause for comic effect, he added, “Apparently not.”
The most compelling evidence of the show being canceled came on a Joe Rogan podcast. Joe Rogan is a close friend of MacDonald’s said that “it hasn’t been picked up for a second season” adding “he was devasted”.
Beyond that, there have been reports about Norm MacDonald having conflicts with Netflix throughout season 1. Again on the Joe Rogan podcast, it was reportedly the case that Norm MacDonald wasn’t able to do any press for the show because of Norm’s segments on the controversial topic of Louis C.K. at the time.
There you have it. It looks like this show isn’t going to get an official confirmation of cancelation but for all intents and purposes, it’s dead.
