Fans of historical dramas like The Crown will have loved one of Netflix’s latest Originals The Last Czars. After a fantastic first season that both educated and entertained naturally some people may be asking can we expect to see more? Unfortunately, it’s best not to get your hopes up for a second season, here’s why.
The Last Czars is a Netflix Original Docu-Drama created by Nutopia. Through the lens of a mega-doc we are treated to the best of both worlds. With detailed accounts and fantastic drama we’re given an in-depth look that into what came before, during and after the dynasty of the Romanovs.
Once the most powerful family in Russia’s history, the Romanov’s ruled for over three hundred years as the Czars of the Russian Empire. At the turn of the 20th Century, discord rose amongst the ranks of the people, and while the Czars were healthy and rich, many citizens lived in squalor, dying from their poverty. This gave rise to the Bolsheviks that eventually usurped the Czars from their throne, paving the way for a communist Russia.
The Last Czars Netflix Renewal Status
Official Netflix Renewal Status: Pending (Last Updated: 04/07/2019)
At the time of writing The Last Czars has a pending rating and the future of the series has yet to be decided. Typically Netflix can take up to a month before any renewal news is announced, often shows can go months without a status update.
The Last Czars is unlikely to receive a second season for the fact that the historic story final moments of the Romanovs was covered. Unless the series were to go into even further detail on the Bolsheviks and the founding of the Soviet Union then don’t expect any further seasons.
Also, at the time of writing Nutopia are already working on a 12-part docu-series for Netflix.
Could Netflix create a Docu-Drama anthology series?
Humanity has a vast wealth of history that can be traced back over 6000 years. From dictators to empires, countless have risen only to crumble to the sands of time. With such a plethora of history to choose from, there’s certainly potential to turn the series into an anthology. More specifically an anthology series that would focus on the end of dynasties, kingdoms, and empires.
The following is a small portion of periods of history we feel deserve the docu-drama treatment:
- The Last Huns – Empire of Attila the Hun
- The Last Khans – Empire of Genghis Khan and his heirs
- The Last Shoguns – Tokugawa Yoshinobu and the last of the samurai
- The Last Emporer – Puyi the last Emporer of the Qing Dynasty
