While you were picking out your outfit for New Year’s Eve, Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 quietly snuck onto Netflix on December 30th. Now, after less than a week of streaming, the movie is already in Netflix’s list of Top 10 trending movie titles.

Directed by Costner, who also co-wrote the script with Jon Baird, this sprawling, epic Western takes place during the American Civil War. Costner stars as Hayes Ellison, a horse trader, who is just one of many people in the American Midwest seeking a better life. The ensemble cast includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, and Giovanni Ribisi, with Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jeff Fahey, Will Patton, Tatanka Means, Owen Crow Shoe, Ella Hunt, and Jamie Campbell Bower.

Costner has been trying to make this film for over two decades, and he finally achieved his dream when the movie opened in theaters last summer. But as anyone who watches the movie on Netflix will know, this is just Part 1 one of the story. So when does Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 2 come out?

When does Horizon 2 come out?

The Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 2 release date has not yet been announced. That said, the movie was filmed back to back with the first Horizon movie, and is expected to release in 2025.

Previously, Horizon 2 had been scheduled to release in theaters on August 16, 2024, which would have been a little less than two months after the release of the first film in June. However, after Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1 bombed at the box office—making only $31.5 million worldwide, failing to make back its estimated $50 million production budget—New Line Cinema canceled the sequel’s planned release.

A New Line Cinema spokesperson announced the decision to pull the sequel from theaters in July, with the following statement: “Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema have decided not to release Horizon: Chapter 2 on August 16 in order to give audiences a greater opportunity to discover the first installment of Horizon over the coming weeks.”

Some critics had a chance to see the sequel when Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 2 premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September. Reviews weren’t exactly favorable. Right now the movie is sitting at 40 percent on the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, although, to be fair, that’s only from 10 reviews.

That said, because the film is already finished, edited, and ready to be seen by audiences, we expect New Line will release the Chapter 2 in theaters sometime this year. Perhaps this Netflix release of Chapter 1 will show the studio that audiences are ready and willing to go to the theaters for Chapter 2.
