Wendy Williams Tells ‘The View’ She Broke Her Sobriety In July As She Reveals Her Current Relationship With Alcohol

What to Watch

Wendy Williams insisted on this morning’s episode of The View that she is sober, but did say she broke her sobriety when she drank on her birthday in July 2024. The famous talk show host, who was placed under a court-ordered conservatorship in 2022, has been open about her own issues with substance abuse, but told the panel that she’s living “alcohol-free” these days.

During a wide-ranging phone interview that was pre-taped and aired on Friday’s episode of the talk show, Williams insisted she’s doing well, but did say she drank on her 60th birthday in July when she was moved from an assisted living facility in Connecticut back to one in New York. Williams is currently unable to leave the facility without the permission of her guardian.

Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin asked the talk show legend, “You’ve been really open about your past struggles with drugs and with alcohol. What’s your relationship with all of that going forward?”

Williams replied, “Moving forward, relationship is fine and it’s wonderful because I’ve had my devices, and I have to tell you something, I am easily going on with my life alcohol-free for the rest of my life.”

She continued, “But I must admit to you, that when I got from Connecticut to New York, it was my birthday, you know, July 18, and yes, I celebrated, you know what I’m saying? But no more, no more alcohol, thank you.”

Williams has reportedly struggled with alcohol for years. Her son Kevin Hunter Jr. shared in the 2024 Where Is Wendy Williams? documentary that doctors believed her dementia diagnosis could have been related to her years of heavy drinking. Hunter said in the doc that his mother’s doctors “basically said that because she was drinking so much, it was starting to affect her headspace and her brain,” adding, “So, I think they said it was alcohol-induced dementia.”

People reported in 2024 that Williams would sometimes be drunk on air during her eponymous talk show. A source told the outlet, “Slowly, we started being like, ‘What’s going on with her?’ We knew she was drinking off camera, but we also didn’t know what else was involved. We were all in the dark. None of us really knew what was going on with Wendy’s health.”

While Williams was placed under the conservatorship after a judge ruled her incapacitated, Williams was adamant on today’s episode of The View that she is not unwell. Although she was taken to the hospital earlier this week, she told The View the visit took place because she “needed a breath of fresh air.”

“I needed to see the doctors. So that’s why I went to the hospital … I also got blood drawn for my thyroid, but most importantly, being at the hospital, it was my choice to get an independent evaluation on my incapacitation — which, I don’t have it. How dare they say I have incapacitation? I do not,” she said.
