Victorian MP to reveal political future

Australia

Victorian independent MP Cathy McGowan is expected to reveal whether she will retire from politics after her supporters anointed a successor.

Ms McGowan will address the media on Monday morning in Wodonga, two days after 200 volunteers gave rural health researcher Helen Haines the nod to replace her.

Ms McGowan, 65, first won her northeast Victorian seat of Indi in 2013 when she defeated Liberal MP Sophie Mirabella.

Nationals deputy leader Bridget McKenzie has hinted at contesting the seat, moving her office from Bendigo to Wodonga and refusing to rule out a potential switch to the lower house.
