‘Tom Petty: Heartbreakers Beach Party’

What to Watch

The waiting was the hardest part, but now the waiting is finally over: 41 years after it originally aired on MTV, a restored version of the documentary special Tom Petty: Heartbreakers Beach Party is finally available online, streaming on Paramount+. Filmmaker Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous, Fast Times At Ridgemont High) joined Petty and his band on the road for a 1982-1983 tour for their album, Long After Dark. Though his biggest hits like “Free Fallin’” and “Won’t Back Down” were still to come, Petty was already a bona fide American rock star, and he was clearly enjoying it—even if, in moments of introspection, he worries about straying too far from his roots. Watching this documentary will take you back to a simpler time, and make you feel like one of the gang. And you’ll get to hear some really great music, too.
