Brussels – The European Union described Wednesday’s threats of annexation of Greenland by Donald Trump as extremely “hypothetical,” while emphasizing its commitment to state sovereignty.

“Fortunately, this is a very hypothetical question,” said European Commission spokeswoman Paula Pinho, pressed on the new statements by the future American president.

Less than two weeks before taking the oath, the Republican billionaire repeated his ambitions on Greenland Tuesday, refusing to rule out a possible annexation by force.

“This is something extremely hypothetical that we do not want to dwell on,” the spokeswoman insisted.

She did, however, specify that article 42.7 of the Lisbon Treaty, a mutual defense clause among EU-member states, did apply to Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark.

“In general, it is clear to us that the sovereignty of states must be respected,” added Anitta Hipper, one of her colleagues, while refusing to discuss “specific” cases. (January 8, 2025)
