The EU and the United States “stronger together” (Von der Leyen and Costa)

Brussels – The United States and Europe are “stronger together,” European Union’s two main leaders, Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa, affirmed on Thursday after statements by President-elect Donald Trump regarding Greenland, which caused “misunderstanding” among Europeans.
“We look forward to having a positive engagement with the new American administration, based on our common values and shared interests. In a challenging world, Europe and the United States are stronger together,” declared the President of the European Commission and the President of the European Council, in two identical messages on X.
Donald Trump threatened to annex Greenland, a territory under the sovereignty of Denmark, a member of the EU and NATO.
Asked about this on Thursday, European Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas indeed reaffirmed the need to respect the “sovereignty and territorial integrity” of Greenland. However, she also noted that it was “good” that the President-elect is interested in the Arctic. (January 9, 2025)
