‘Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of Black Genius)’

What to Watch

Let’s get this out of the way: Despite the documentary’s title, Sly Stone himself does not appear in the new Questlove documentary, Sly Lives!, which is now streaming on Hulu. Once you let go of that expectation, you’ll be able to sit back and enjoy the story of Sly and the Family Stone, an American funk band that forever changed the sound of the ’60s. Viewers will be walked through Sly’s early days, to his successful 60s funk band, to his decline and struggles with alcohol and drug abuse. It’s not quite the revelation that was Questlove’s Summer of Soul doc, but it’s a good follow-up for anyone who wants to dive a little deeper into a band that perfectly captured the warring tension between revolution, progress, and civil liberties of the 1960s.
