Slovak Foreign Minister J. Blanár emphasized the need to preserve the veto power in the EU

New Delhi/Bratislava – The Slovak Republic has a clear position on complying with international law. Key among other things is the preservation of the veto right in the European Union (EU), because otherwise, it would be possible to speak of a violation of state sovereignty. This was stated on Tuesday by the Slovak Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Juraj Blanár (Smer-SD) during his official visit to India and after speaking in a panel discussion at the multilateral Raisina Dialogue conference in New Delhi, reports TASR.
Blanár emphasized that this panel was very important at the present time, “when we face the erosion of international law,” and expressed his pleasure that the Indian Minister of External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar also spoke at this event.
“The topics were very diverse, but primarily it was about compliance with international law, where the Slovak Republic has an absolutely clear position,” said Blanár.
He added that he also discussed the situation concerning the new administration of the United States and the security situation in Europe in connection with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
The head of Slovak diplomacy on this occasion emphasized the importance of the Indo-Pacific area and highlighted the Raisina Dialogue event.
“I perceive our participation as very important, because we are a country respected within multilateral operations. We operate in all major organizations, and therefore it is natural for us to be present at such forums where current topics are discussed,” stated Blanár.
The minister recalled the violation of international law in connection with the war in Ukraine, noting that any change of borders by force is unacceptable in terms of adherence to the UN Charter, and stressed that it is necessary to return to diplomatic solutions. At the end of his speech, Blanár expressed disappointment with the current development of the situation in the Gaza Strip.
The Raisina Dialogue is a multilateral conference held annually in New Delhi, India. Since its inception in 2016, the conference has become India’s flagship event in the field of geopolitics and geoeconomics. The conference is structured as a cross-sectoral discussion with multiple stakeholders, involving various global policymakers including heads of states, ministers, and government officials. (March 18)
