‘Roswell, New Mexico’
Roswell, New Mexico is not quite Peak CW Television, as it never caught on as much as a show like Riverdale did, but it has classic WB in its DNA as an adaptation of the same book series as 1999’s Roswell. It follows Liz (Jeanine Mason), who returns to her hometown of Roswell 10 years after high school graduation and the death of her older sister; she almost immediately discovers that her former crush, Max (Nathan Dean), is an alien who keeps his otherworldly identity hidden as he serves the community as a deputy sheriff. Liz finds herself entangled with the extraterrestrial, getting reacquainted with Max’s siblings Isobel and Michael (also aliens) and bringing her human friends into the fold to stop a violent alien from exposing everything. Sure, the sci-fi plots can (and do) get convoluted, but it’s the relationships (romantic, familial, and otherwise) that has me returning to the series time and again as one of my all-time comfort shows. At its core, Roswell, New Mexico is full of hot people (and aliens) doing hot people things — “a real bisexual alien blast,” as one character puts it in Season 2, and what more could you ask for, really?
