Pensioner applicants complain of delays

Long delays in processing new pension applications are causing older Australians to suffer hardship, with the federal government admitting it needs more staff to clear the backlog.

The Human Services Department reportedly does not have enough staff to approve the high number of applications, with pensioners saying their standard of living is falling as they wait up to six months for their paperwork to be processed and approved.

Applicants are having to apply 13 weeks in advance to avoid delays, but Human Services Minister Michael Keenan says more staff are being deployed to clear the backlog, News Corp Australia reports.
