‘Mission: Impossible III’

What to Watch

It’s Final Reckoning week at long last, and if teaser trailers are anything to go by, a rewatch of Mission: Impossible III may be in order before heading to the cinema this weekend. The third installment of the franchise, released in 2006, was director J.J. Abrams’ first feature film and once again starred Tom Cruise as agent Ethan Hunt. In it, Hunt has retired from the IMF in favor of a quiet life with his fianceé Julia (Michelle Monaghan), but of course, there’s a mission, and of course, he chooses to accept it. The mission? Track down elusive arms dealer Owen Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman, the series’ best villain to date), who is in pursuit of a mysterious biohazard codenamed the “Rabbit’s Foot.” Mission: Impossible III is the first movie in the series that shows shades of the Mission: Impossible to come, beginning to build Hunt’s core team going forward by integrating the two characters are most crucial to Hunt’s overall arc — Simon Pegg’s Benji and Ving Rhames’ Luther, reprising his role for the third time.
