55′ TRY: Alex Mitchell scores for the Lions
Great individual effort from Lions scrumhalf Alex Mitchell.

45′ NO TRY: Lions denied by a magnificent cover tackle
What a tackle from NSW prop Tom Lambert.
The Lions made a break and at the end of a passage of passing, openside flanker Josh van der Flier looked certain to score in the left corner.
But the NSW prop never gave up, completed the perfect tackle around the legs, and van der Flier dropped the ball as he tried to ground it.

Off that penalty, the Waratahs kicked for touch and had a lineout five metres out.
The Tahs go for the maul. It is a strong maul and the men in blue are getting closer to the line.
The ball is in the arms of hooker Ethan Dobbins who gets the ball down.
TRY, TRY, TRY!
Flyhalf Jack Bowen missed the conversion. It hit the post.

Dan McKellar pleased with his NSW Waratahs
NSW coach Dan McKellar says he is very happy with the first half from his team.
He has just spoken to Stan Sport, ahead of the second half, about what NSW wants to do for the rest of the match.
“The boys are up. I’m really pleased with that first 40 minutes,” he says.
“I think our kicking game is really important, don’t overplay in our own end, and look for kick space in behind them.
“Turn them around and keep playing the game in their end.”
HT: British and Irish Lions 14 leading NSW Waratahs 5
A very entertaining half a rugby football comes to an end.
The British and Irish Lions were the better side, but the NSW Waratahs defended stoutly.
The scoreline is a fair reflection of that 40 minutes.

40′ Lions threaten but Waratahs hold firm
Another great defensive effort from the Waratahs.
The Lions had multiple phases at the NSW goal line.
There is a chance down the left.
Right winger Mack Hansen has come all the way to the left, drawn in a defender, and there are two Lions unmarked on the outside.
But the offload goes behind everyone.
Left winger Blair Kinghorn cleans up, the Tahs turn the ball over and kick the ball out to end the half.
36′ TRY: Darby Lancaster scores for the NSW Waratahs
Terrific from the NSW Waratahs.
Left winger Darby Lancaster has scored in the left corner.

The Tahs had the ball 40 metres out and they went down the left, which is the short side.
The ball is with Taniela Tupou, who then passes left. It is with Rob Leota (number 6) who then passes to a wide-open Lancaster.
The winger has Lions fullback Hugo Keenan. Lancaster gets through that tackle and scores the try.
34′ TRY: Huw Jones scores his second try for the Lions
Lions outside centre Huw Jones has a second try.
After being given a reprieve by the TMO, the Lions have marched down the field and scored their second try.
It was Jones who scored.

The Lions had the ball just a metre, or so, from the NSW goal line.
Scrumhalf Alex Mitchell threw a flat pass, missing three players, to his right to Jones. Jones put on a wicked sidestep and scored.
30′ NO TRY: Gamble and NSW denied by TMO
NSW flanker Charlie Gamble scores.
They go for the maul off the lineout, just five metres from the Lions’ goal line.
Gamble runs off the maul, and crashes over the line to score.
HANG ON.
The TMO (television match official) believes the Tahs have illegally scored.
Waratahs lock Fergus Lee-Warner has been called for obstruction.
In that maul, he put himself in front of the player who took the ball into that maul. That has obstructed the Lions from being able to defend effectively.
It is a penalty for obstruction.

29′ Taniela Tupou held up over the line
NSW prop Taniela Tupou was millimetres from scoring.
The Tahs had a few phases at the Lions’ line.
Tupou took a pick-and-drive and appeared to be over the line.
He was just, and I mean just held up.
The big man did not stay over the goal line. He fought to place the ball back and give his team a chance at scoring.
The Waratahs got a penalty, and then another.
They have a lineout five metres from the Lions’ line …

25′ Waratahs holding firm at the goal line
The Lions spent the best part of seven minutes deep inside NSW territory.
The Tahs needed to rely on some illegal play at the breakdown to slow down the Lions.
They conceded a few penalties, giving the Lions a pair of lineouts on the goal line.
But the Tahs repelled the Lions well.
The men in blue never were bending, but did not break.

15′ Waratahs miss a chance
The Waratahs were awarded a penalty off the restart, following the Huw Jones try.
The Tahs then put on a lineout move, with prop Taniela Tupou getting the ball down the left flank.
The big man was stopped just three metres from the line.
NSW had three more phases before losing the ball.
The Lions kicked away, giving the Tahs another chance through a line-out 25 metres from the goal line.
But the throw from hooker Ethan Dobbins misses everyone, and the Lions collected the footy and got out of danger.
12′ TRY: Huw Jones scores for the Lions
It is a simple try for the British and Irish Lions, scored by outside centre Huw Jones.
The Lions secured a line-out win on their own throw, inside the attacking 22m.
The Lions were able to gain a couple of metres from the maul, before spinning the ball out to the backs.
Inside centre Sione Tuipulotu took the ball, ran at the defensive line, then gave a pop pass to his Scottish teammate Jones.
Jones burst through the line and scored.

11′ Lions with two scrum penalties
We mentioned just before kick-off that the scrum would be closely watched tonight.
There have been three scrums in the opening 11 minutes, and the Lions have won two penalties.
Much better from the front three in this match, thus far.
