Kai Lohmann ices it for the Lions!

By Dean Bilton

Brisbane has missed a few chances in this quarter, which isn’t unusual for the Lions. But with that Lohmann mark and snap from the pocket I think you can safely put a line through this one.

Back out to 35 points with 9:38 on the clock.

Blake Acres kicks another one for Carlton!

By Dean Bilton

It’s a 29-point game! Under five goals for the first time in a very long time.

Nic Newman took an incredibly courageous mark at half-back, and then the Blues had a crack straight through the middle of the ground. It worked this time, and Acres marked 45 from goal. Clutch set shot converted. 13:19 to play.

Harry McKay kicks another one for Carlton

By Dean Bilton

One goal down, six to go for the Blues.

McKay takes a strong mark on Andrews and converts his set shot. The Blues have 16:49 left to overturn a 35-point deficit. They’re going to roll the dice.

3QT: The Blues have a crack but still trail the Lions by 40

By Dean Bilton

Certainly a more competitive and entertaining quarter, but Carlton remains too far back to have any serious hope here.

The Lions were slow out of the blocks after half-time but settled fairly quickly, and if not for some clownery in front of goal probably could have boosted that margin back out a little further.

Still, 40 points up at three-quarter-time of an elimination final is a good place to be. They’ve just got to manage their way through it from here.

A couple of minutes left in the third quarter

By Dean Bilton

The lead is back out to 40 points, so the Blues really need to find at least one more before the break to keep any minor hope of a miracle alive.

Callum Ah Chee finally kicks the goal for the Lions

By Dean Bilton

You’ve never seen a goal that puts a team 39 points up celebrated in such a style, as if a giant sigh of relief was released around the ground.

The Lions have started winning a couple of contests again and kept a bit of composure inside 50. Ah Chee was able to run it in to an open goal, and unlike his teammtes he made no mistake.

The Lions have just blown two golden chances

By Dean Bilton

Logan Morris has missed a set shot from 15 metres out, directly in front and now Zac Bailey has had a fresh-airy at a kick from inside the goalsquare.

Inexplicable mistakes, perhaps only explained by pressure. They’re still in front by 33 points!

Harry McKay kicks another! Carlton has five in a row!

By Dean Bilton

Now then! I’m not prepared to declare things “interesting” yet, but I will elevate the situation to “intriguing”.

It’s a 31-point game, but the Blues are running on top of the ground right now. They’re dominating the midfield, looking sharper than the Lions for the first time all night and are finding options inside 50. McKay marked in space and converted this time.

Elijah Hollands makes it four in a row for the Blues!

By Dean Bilton

The Carlton midfield is getting to work and the Blues are creating by hand. Sam Walsh burst out of the stoppage and had composure, ignoring some initial options to find Hollands in plenty of space.

The left-footed snap from Hollands was lovely and now there’s just a tiny bit of belief brewing.

George Hewett kicks the first of the third for Carlton

By Dean Bilton

So that’s three in a row now for the Blues, which some will tell you constitutes a momentum swing. When you trail by 43 points still, it’s a bit tougher to make that case.

Nice set shot from Hewett, which just barely carried the pack from 45 out.

Second half is underway

By Dean Bilton

Callum Ah Chee gets the third quarter underway with an early behind. Hard to predict what sort of game we’ll get here in the second half, blowout finals are always weird things.

First question is if Carlton can make Brisbane sweat even the slightest bit. They’ll have to start fast if they want to.

Jack Payne has been subbed out for Brisbane with a knee injury

By Dean Bilton

The first bit of bad news of the night for Brisbane.

Payne went down in a marking contest and immediately grasped his knee before limping to the bench. He has now been withdrawn from the game and will likely get some scans on that knee, though it’s hard to know if the subbing is more precautionary given the state of the game.

Conor McKenna is on his stead.

HT: Lions dominate the half and lead Blues by 48 points

By Dean Bilton

Eric Hipwood flies for a mark
(Getty Images)

So I do think Brisbane has been very good here. The Lions have been emboldened by their own dominance to take the game on with some real dare and it’s made for some pretty footy, but this lead has been built on a solid defensive base against a team ill-equipped to deal with it.

The Carlton players honestly look like they haven’t recovered from the St Kilda loss two weeks ago. At that moment, mentally they all thought their season was over. Port Adelaide gave them a lifeline but they have wasted it in a half of footy in which they didn’t turn up.

Somehow the Blues won the inside 50 count in that quarter. At one point, they trailed 60-0. You imagine Carlton has to come out swinging in the second half, but Brisbane will be looking to manage the game through from here with eyes on GWS next week.

Orazio Fantasia makes it two in a row for Carlton!

By Dean Bilton

Lovely snap from Fantasia, who got boot to ball so quickly and floated that one through.

The margin is back to 48 points, which is practically nothing really. Right?

Patrick Cripps kicks a goal for Carlton!

By Dean Bilton

Nobody kicks 10 goals in a row against these Blues!

With 3:43 on the clock in the second quarter, the Blues have a score. Not just any score either, an actual full goal! Six points!

It’s come from a bad Eric Hipwood turnover on the wing and then a dropped mark by Ryan Lester in defence, but who cares? We will not be seeing the worst half in V/AFL history tonight.

Five minutes to play in the second quarter

By Dean Bilton

Still no score for Carlton. Dayne Zorko has had about 400 touches. The Blues are winning a bit of the ball but just have no clue how to get it past the Lions’ defence.

No team has ever been scoreless at half-time of a V/AFL match. Two points is the lowest score ever. We could be seeing some history here.

Zac Bailey kicks another one for Brisbane

By Dean Bilton

I’ve blogged a lot of footy this year. A lot of Richmond, North and West Coast games. Not sure I’ve had to blog anything as one-sided as this. Carlton may as well have not bothered coming I’m afraid.

It’s nine goals straight for Brisbane, Carlton yet to even manage a single behind.

Cam Rayner takes a hanger and kicks the goal!

By Dean Bilton

Loading Twitter content

These Lions boys are just having some fun out there right now. Rayner had the perfect sit up Cerra and got a tidy little ride there too.

He and his teammates celebrated the mark even before they could celebrate the goal. This is very, very ugly for Carlton.

Carlton has made its tactical sub halfway through the second quarter

By Dean Bilton

That gives you some idea as to how things are going.

Matt Kennedy has been subbed off for Tom De Koning. Let’s see what that does.
