‘Julia’s Stepping Stones’
Academy Award-winning documentarian Juila Reichert died in 2022, at the age of 76, but Netflix viewers can watch her come alive again in her new autobiographical short documentary, Julia’s Stepping Stones. Reichert’s husband, Steven Bognar (with whom she directed the Oscar-winning American Factory), cut together clips and photos to a voice-over read by Reichert, describing her working-class childhood, her feminist awakening, and her early filmmaking journey. Though it feels unpolished and unfinished, that’s almost part of the charm. It’s like watching a home video from a relative who lived a very impressive life.
