Governor DeSantis Vetoes Idea of a ‘Vaccine Passport’

Breaking News Politics USA World

It should be no secret that a lot of people on the left are viewing the current self-inflicted crisis surrounding the China virus as a way of reordering society. Several members of the Democrat Congressional leadership are obviously using the “relief” payments to individuals as a waypoint on the road to a universal guaranteed income. The declaration of a “public health emergency” has been used to shut down businesses…except for those who have enough money to buy legal exceptions…and churches and limit family gatherings. We are required to wear masks as symbols of our obedience to the authority of the state…for all the good they do, they might as well have ordered everyone to wear their underwear over their head, at least that would have had an amusing side as it made their real point even more clear.

As this entire exercise is about forced obedience and has nothing to do with keeping the citizenry alive…let’s be serious; the record of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer demonstrate they would cheerfully kill as many people as it took to achieve their goals. There is no reason to believe they are uniquely bad…the distribution of a vaccine for the virus has created a real problem. A lot of people are taking a hard pass on getting the vaccine. As successful resistance in a small thing leads to general resistance in larger matters, this can’t be allowed to stand in the parts of the world where civil liberties are viewed as something that the government begrudgingly allows you to have, the “vaccine passport” has made its debut.

More than 448 million doses of coronavirus vaccines have been administered worldwide, and in some countries immunization campaigns are allowing people to resume quasi-normal life. In Israel, where 50 percent of the population has been immunized, residents can show a “green pass” — proof that they have been vaccinated — to enter restaurants, theaters and gyms. Both the European Union and China recently announced their own versions of vaccination passes. While vaccination certificates may allow holders to enter businesses within a country, governments are also hoping to use them to regulate international travel and borders.

But in much of the world, coronavirus vaccines remain in short supply and, in some cases, wholly unavailable. As governments, largely in rich countries, seek to use vaccine passports to relax restrictions, they risk relying on a fragmented system that could have the adverse effect of extending the pandemic.

In addition to the vaccine passes being prepped in Europe and China, the World Economic Forum is working with a group called the Commons Project on a system for documenting coronavirus vaccinations. IBM is developing a Digital Health Pass, and the International Air Transport Association, a trade association for the airline industry, is developing a smartphone app that will provide passengers with information about testing and vaccination requirements.

If you’re wondering who the World Economic Forum is and why they are involved in this project, here’s some homework for you.

And who can forget this deleted tweet celebrating the lack of noise in major cities caused by the lockdowns?

On Friday, as the European Union announced its plan for a “Digital Green Certificate” that would be required of all travelers in Europe, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis drew a line.

“I just want to make very clear in Florida, we are not doing any vaccine passports. All those experts said that it was a bad idea. I think it’s a bad idea and so that will not happen. And so folks should get vaccinated, if they want to, we’ll obviously provide that, but under no circumstances will the state be asking you to show proof of vaccination, and I don’t think private companies should be doing that either,” the governor said Thursday.

He said each Floridian should decide for themselves whether they get the vaccine and what types of activities or events they’re comfortable attending.

“To start going down the road of vaccine passports, I mean, you have some of these states saying to go to a sporting event, you have to show either a negative test or a vaccine proof. I think you just got to make decisions. If you want to go to an event, go to an event. If you don’t, don’t. But to be requiring people to provide all this proof, that’s not how you get society back to normal so we’re rejecting any vaccine passports here in the state of Florida,” DeSantis said.

At a Thursday morning roundtable discussion on the Wuhan virus and public policy, the idea of a vaccine passport surfaced and was panned:

DeSantis also brought up the topic Thursday morning during a roundtable discussion with Dr. Scott Atlas, professor Sunetra Gupta, Dr. Jay Bhattacharya and Dr. Martin Kulldorff. They all disagreed with the idea of vaccine passports and said it could do more harm than good.

“The vaccine hesitancy data show that the people who are hesitant to take vaccines actually tend to be the working class people, poor, poor people, minority populations. We’re going to then turn around and say, ‘You have to have a vaccine passport to participate in American life,’ it’s going to be a new vaccine Jim Crow. It’s a huge, huge mistake that will undermine trust in public health, and I think it’s just morally, it’s just morally wrong,” Bhattacharya, from Stanford University, said.

As far as I know, DeSantis is alone. In fact, some governors are laying the groundwork to link a vaccine passport of some type to relaxing lockdowns. For instance, when Illinois Democrat J. B. Pritzker announced he was allowing a tiny bit of freedom back in that state, one of the things that people overlooked was an implication that everyone would have to have a document certifying they were free of the Wuhan virus…this “disease-free” certification is familiar to anyone who has served in Korea.

DeSantis has been a bright light of sanity in this epic episode of stupidity and evil. Florida saying no to a vaccine passport is a start but more governors who are concerned about public health and civil liberties need to weigh in on this nonsense before it goes too far.
