East Lyme — East Lyme Middle School and Niantic Center School were closed Friday after members of the school community tested positive for COVID-19.

East Lyme Public School Superintendent Jeffrey Newton sent an emailed letter to staff and parents and guardians on Thursday, announcing that the schools would be closed Friday. East Lyme Middle School will reopen Monday, he said. It was not clear when Niantic Center would reopen.

The positive cases were isolated to the two schools and other East Lyme schools remained open.

The person who tested positive from East Lyme Middle School last attended school on Tuesday. The person at Niantic Center last attended on Monday. Ledge Light Health District had been notified of the case and that anyone considered a “close contact” with the infected person would be contacted by school or health officials for contact tracing, Newton said.

The district did not say whether it was students or staff members that tested positive.

Last Friday, Newton sent a letter saying that someone in the East Lyme High School community had tested positive for the virus.

Students at East Lyme Middle School still were attending their classes Friday, through online learning.

“We are closely monitoring this situation and we will provide you with updates if any further specific information comes forth regarding this case,” Newton wrote.
