President Donald Trump gets all “goggly-eyed” talking to Vladimir Putin — and believes everything he said in their 90-minute phone call despite evidence to the contrary, Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said Sunday.
In an interview on CBS News’ “Face The Nation,” the number two Democrat in the Senate, criticized Trump’s attitude toward Putin and some other world leaders.
“This president is totally dazzled by Vladimir Putin, by the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, by authoritarian leaders in countries like Brazil,” Durbin said.
“He gets on the phone with them and loses it, gets all googly-eyed over their assertions that they have nothing to with what’s going on in Venezuela.”
“Listen to what [national security adviser] John Bolton says, listen even what Secretary of State [Mike] Pompeo said,” he added. “Russia has sent at least a planeload full of these little green men that we’ve seen in eastern Ukraine and they are destabilizing the situation” now in Venezuela.
Durbin was also critical of Attorney General William Barr’s testimony before the upper chamber about special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia report.
“Let’s be honest about it,” Durbin said. “Attorney General Barr not only received that letter from [special counsel] Bob Mueller saying in writing that he disagreed with the attorney general’s characterization of the Mueller report, he then had a telephone conversation with him to follow.
“To say he wasn’t aware of Mueller’s misgivings about his characterization, that is at the minimum misleading if not deception to the American people.”
