Surprise surprise, James Gunn knows how to make a good comic book adaptation. In Creature Commandos, the Superman and Guardians of the Galaxy auteur spotlights a ragtag group of monsters and non-humans, including a Nazi-hunting robot and Frankenstein’s Bride, who must work together to save the world from an impending supervillain. I always jive with Gunn’s stories and tactics — cheeky jokes at breakneck speed, tender moments throughout, mismatched team members, etc — but Creature Commandos really seizes on the oddball dynamics. And credit where credit is due, Episode 4, “Chasing Squirrels,” actually brought me to tears. It’s a fun, fast-paced, and well-written addition to the newly (and mostly) reset DC Universe. Add it to your watchlist!
