Christmas Day Explosion Rocks Downtown Nashville

Breaking News Politics USA World

A large explosion was reported in downtown Nashville early on Christmas morning. It is reported to have happened near Second Avenue and Broadway around 6:30 am.

WKRM reported, “The Metro Nashville Office of Emergency Management told News 2 a parked RV exploded and caused damage to several buildings. They said crews are currently assessing the damage but no injuries have been reported. Officials with the OEM also reported foul play was not suspected at the time.”

However, at an 8:30 am press conference, Don Aaron, Metro Nashville Police Department’s spokesperson, stated that the authorities believe the explosion was the result of an intentional act. Police have shut down the area as the investigation is conducted.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee announced the explosion on Twitter. “Early this morning, an explosion occurred in downtown Nashville around Second Avenue and Commerce Street. Federal, state and local law enforcement partners are on the scene to investigate what we believe was an intentional act,” he wrote.

Police believe that a vehicle was involved in the explosion, according to The Associated Press. Along with local police, the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and explosives. “Right now, it’s a public safety concern, to make sure everybody is accounted for and to make sure the spread of the fire doesn’t go any further,” said Michael Knight, a spokesman for the ATF in Nashville.

According to people in the area at the time of the explosion, “buildings shook in the immediate area and beyond after a loud boom was heard,” The Associated Press reported.

Buck McCoy, a resident living near the area, posted footage on Facebook showing water pouring down his ceiling. Alarms can be heard blaring in the background. McCoy stated that his windows were completely blown out. “All my windows, every single one of them got blown into the next room. If I had been standing there it would have been horrible,” he said.

“It felt like a bomb. It was that big,” he added. “There were about four cars on fire. I don’t know if it was so hot they just caught on fire, and the trees were all blown apart.”
