‘Chaos: The Manson Murders’

What to Watch

Though muddled at times, the new Errol Morris Netflix documentary, Chaos: The Manson Murders, is definitely worth a watch, especially if you’re still obsessing over the Manson Family murders over 50 years later. The film is adapted from Tom O’Neill’s 2019 book, CHAOS: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixtiesand O’Neill himself is featured prominently in the documentary. The author presents a compelling new—though ultimately unproven—motivation for Charles Manson and his cult followers, who brutally murdered seven people, including actress Sharon Tate, in 1969. O’Neill suggests that there is evidence Manson was connected to a secretive CIA mind control initiative, that strove to create brainwashed killing machines. O’Neill is up front about the fact that it’s just a theory—but it’s certainly an interesting one!
