Speaker Donald J. Trump? A scenario that seemed impossible at the start of the year is growing ever more likely as Donald Trump says he would accept the Speakership if offered. GOP members of Congress have been throwing their support behind Donald J. Trump to be America’s next Speaker. Trump is expected to meet with lawmakers in the Capitol on Tuesday.

The first obstacle Trump must clear is a repeal of GOP House Rule 26. Rule 26 states someone charged with a felony is not eligible for Congressional leadership. However, the GOP conference can change this rule anytime with a vote from GOP House members. If it reaches this point, any GOP House member who votes against Trump would likely face a nasty primary.

If Rule 26 is repealed, Trump would need a majority vote from all U.S. House members to become Speaker. If all Republicans vote for Trump, Trump will win the Speakership. In this scenario, the same applies as above; if any Republican votes against Trump, they would likely face a nasty primary.

If Trump clears both hurdles, he will become the first Speaker- President in American history. Trump has said he would only serve as Speaker for 100 days or so and then step down when he feels the House GOP has found a valid replacement.

The action kicks off next week. Trump is expected to travel to Washington on Tuesday to meet with the GOP Caucus.
