‘Abbott Elementary’ Season 4, Episode 17, “Karaoke”

Four seasons in, Abbott Elementary‘s quality writing, comedy, and creativity haven’t wavered one bit, and Season 4, Episode 17, “Karaoke,” is proof that Quinta Brunson’s Emmy-winning mockumentary is still at the top of its class — even when its teachers take a field trip. After school lets out, Janine (Brunson) and the teachers meet up at a karaoke bar for a unique night of bonding. Meanwhile, Eddie (Tyler James Williams) works overtime to make money at his second job. And Ava (Janelle James) and O’Shon (Matthew Law) finally go out on a date. (That’s right, Abbott successfully made fans swoon over another slow-burn.) Watching the teachers sing their hearts out (particularly Jacob’s rendition of Papa Roach’s “Last Resort”), seeing Abbott make a brilliant callback to one of its most memorable jokes, and witnessing this cast fully embrace their characters’ quirks in top-notch performances filled me with rare levels of joy. (Did I cry happy tears multiple times? Who’s to say!)
