900 Days of Waiting Gone in a Day—Dog’s Adoption Didn’t Last Long

Breaking News Dog Rescue Stories Dogs

Sora, a black Labrador Pitbull mix, arrived at Valley Animal Center in Fresno, California, almost four years ago. The no-kill shelter welcomed her with open arms after her previous owner surrendered her, admitting that she needed more attention and training than they could provide.

Since then, Sora has spent nearly 900 days behind kennel bars, waiting for the day someone would choose her. Despite her affectionate nature and boundless energy, she remained overlooked. But recently, hope finally seemed to shine on Sora—someone came to the shelter, interested in giving her a forever home.

Everyone at the shelter was thrilled when Sora was officially adopted. She left the facility with a wagging tail, believing she had finally found a family to love her. However, her happiness was heartbreakingly short-lived.

Less than 24 hours later, the new owner called the shelter, saying they wanted to return her. Sora had barely begun to adjust to her new surroundings before she was brought back, confused and heartbroken.

The shelter explained that Sora had not been given enough time to decompress in her new home. The transition had been rushed, and she was introduced to new family members too quickly, leading to an overwhelming situation. With no chance to settle in, her new owner made the painful decision to return her.

The rejection was devastating. After waiting for so long, Sora had tasted freedom for just one day before being sent back.

Despite the heartbreaking setback, the staff at Valley Animal Center refuse to give up hope. They believe that the right person is out there—someone who will see Sora for the loving, loyal, and energetic dog she truly is.

The shelter explains that while Sora has developed anxious behaviors from her extended stay, she is still an affectionate and playful pup at heart. Their certified dog trainer, Mariah Prudhume, believes that if Sora could find a loving home, her mental health would dramatically improve.

She just needs a patient and understanding adopter—someone who won’t give up on her.

Sora would do best in a single-pet home with a family willing to dedicate time to her training. She gets along well with humans and children over five years old, making her a fantastic companion for the right household.

Now, more than ever, Sora needs a second chance. She has been let down too many times—but with the right family, her story can still have the happy ending she deserves.
