Actress Octavia Spencer was featured as a guest on last night’s (July 23) episode of Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, and answered the frequently asked question about if Ma 2 is really happening. The Oscar winner talked about how the film’s success came as a surprise, because it happened after the initial release.

If you haven’t seen the original film, you’ve probably at least seen the memes and soundbites circulating around the internet. Ma is a psychological horror movie released in 2019. The plot follows a lonely middle-aged woman, played by Spencer, who befriends a group of popular teenagers, supplies them with alcohol, and lets them party in her basement. What starts out as a dream for these teenagers quickly turns into a story of obsession and unprocessed grief.

Is a Ma 2 Movie Happening?

Yes! Blumhouse confirmed that a sequel for the 2019 hit is on the way in 2025. The film is still in its early stages with no confirmation of an official release date, but Spencer is set to reprise her role.

In a statement announcing the film’s sequel, Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum said, “Ma has proven to be a social phenomenon since its release in 2019, with fans eagerly embracing the film and Octavia’s iconic performance as Ma. Ma likes to say, ‘Don’t make me drink alone,’ so we’re thrilled Octavia will join us again for a second round.”

What Did Octavia Spencer Say About The Ma Sequel?

In her Watch What Happens Live segment, Spencer confirmed that the Ma sequel is “definitely happening,” and provided updates on where they are at in production.

“We are working very very hard to make sure the script is great,” she told Andy Cohen. “Because you guys are a rabid fanbase and if I’m gonna kill somebody I need to do it right.”

She went on to talk about how she was approached to be a part of the film, how they were shocked at the film’s surge in popularity during the pandemic, and how the popularity has sustained itself.

“I was filming in Prague last year. It’s been six, seven years since we did that movie. It was the number six movie in the world on Netflix,” she said.
