‘Dutton Ranch’ Episode 9 Recap (Season Finale): Keep The Bones

Dutton Ranch is quiet in the Texas dark and heat. Everett McKinney stoops as he collects hundreds of spent shell casings, and nearby, Beth Dutton scrubs spilled blood from the flagstones. It’s just them here now.     

“You ever get that feeling that the whole world is gonna open up and swallow everything that you love?” Beth asks, and Everett acknowledges the one time he did.

“Well, I’ve had it so many times I’ve lost count. And I was right. Every time.”

Even in the course of Everett’s new friendship with Beth, he knows this to be true. The wall of fire that destroyed the Montana ranch to which she and Rip Wheeler gave all. The virus that ripped through their Rio Paloma herd, consuming their livelihood from tip to tail. And the latest conflagration, a firefight among the cow pens that will soon see a sequel. With Beth and her people, from Yellowstone through the first season of Dutton Ranch, the fight to defend what’s theirs has always been constant. And Beth’s battle does not conclude with this Episode 9 finale.  

But let’s back up a minute. After Cowboy Austin’s spilling of the beans regarding dirty business at the 10-Petal, Beth and Rip have brought the latest delivery of cattle from Mexico to their ranch for inspection. Rob-Will doesn’t like it, nor does he like being ignored by his mother’s outside hires as he huffs and puffs. And he definitely doesn’t like the tasty knuckle sandwich he’s served by Rip, once Rob-Will hurls an uncouth insult Beth’s way. Humbled and angry, he calls Beulah from his pickup. “Your assets just pinched our shipment. We’re fucked.”

He’s not talking about fine-marbled Angus steaks. As Beth, Rip, Azul, and Zachariah watch, Everett goes forearm-deep into the body cavity of an anesthetized cow, where the veterinarian removes packets of fentanyl worth millions on the street. This is the dirty business. For at least 15 years, Beulah and the 10-Petal have moved cartel product into the US using the bodies of living cattle as drug mules. On the other side of this operation is “El Padrino” The Godfather, Mariano Reyes (Raoul Max Trujillo). And we catch Padrino in Mexico tossing candy to kids at a baptism. He’s a kindly old grandpa when he’s not bringing convoys of gunmen to Rio Paloma.

While Everett departs the ranch to confront Beulah – She’s still at his house! They were gonna retire together! But that was before he learned she’s a drug-runner – Beth conducts a search for Carter. Sheriff Wade, no help, says Beth’s son is 19 and young people leave home all the time. She finds Oreana at the big 10-P mansion, but she hasn’t seen Carter since the drunk party explosion. Beth calls Carter, leaves a message. He’s pissed, she gets it. But the hard parts she said were coming? They have arrived, and they’re packing heat.        

Mariano is the real kingpin of the 10-Petal, because it’s just the northern part of his empire. He stayed insulated in Mexico all the while, as Beulah brought in his product and serviced the ranch’s debt. It was only supposed to be temporary, but we’ve all seen enough shows with cartel action – like Landman, to use a Sheridan-O-Verse example, with Tommy over a barrel to Gallino – to know how these guys operate. To Beulah, Mariano demands the installation of Joaquin as her successor. To his men, he demands the skulls of Beth and Rip, the “wolves” she hired. And to his son, Mariano demands he kill his brother. Mariano’s own brotherly relationship with Beulah has long since faded. She raised his son in safety and comfort. But Joaquin is soft and Rob–Will is a walking liability. It’s time for the godfather to exert control.

As a cartel hit squad advances on Dutton Ranch, Beth still cannot find Carter. And this is where we remember again that she and Rip never actually met Dwight White. As Rip, Azul, Zach, and Everett engage the cartel gunmen with pistols and rifles – as bullets fly, blood spills, and cartel soldiers give their lives for El Padrino – Carter is drinking beers at Dwight’s and making spontaneous life plans. Oreana always suspected where to find him, and to her credit, did tell him to call his worried mama. But Oreana has also taken a pregnancy test – positive result – and told Carter she liked the side he showed at the party, when he tried to fight for her. If Rio Paloma crushes everyone inside its outlaw grip, then they should just get out. Together. Drive away. Tonight. Oreana kisses Carter furiously. “I’m so fucking serious.”   

It was a nice romantic plan for two wild-eyed young people, but it was never gonna fly. The violence is too much for them to escape, maybe for anyone to escape. After Team Dutton Ranch fights off the first wave of cartel shooters, after they dump those bodies in Train Station 2, and after they disgustedly give Beulah back her drug shipment, Beth’s phone rings. It is Mariano, and his actual kingpin’s play is revealed. El Padrino has abducted Carter.   

Her entire world is in danger of being swallowed whole again. She agrees with her husband. It’s not Dutton Ranch they want, not the load of fentanyl; not even their hostage. What Mariano Reyes really wants is to make the people who stole from him suffer. “They don’t want Carter,” Rip says. “They want us.”

But this is Beth Dutton we’re talking about. She has weathered as many storms as she has caused. And she will not stand by to watch her world swallowed again. “They’re gonna fucking get us.”

The Beth Parts for Dutton Ranch Episode 9 (“El Padrino”): 

• “You brought us in to fix a business that doesn’t exist.” Fighting with Mariano and the cartel doesn’t earn, and they still have no herd of their own. So in Dutton Ranch Season 2, what are Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler gonna do for work? Maybe the new showrunner knows.

• Beth was mentioned once in Marshals, so she exists further afield in the Yellowstone diaspora of shows. We wonder if she called Kayce Dutton after this finale, since both Carter and Tate Dutton have been kidnapped.

• Once, Everett McKinney did see the world swallow everything he loved. His own son, he tells Beth, was taken before his time. Did Everett and Beulah have a child? This is not directly indicated. But recall earlier in the season, during their on-again off-again romance, Everett’s mention of a “Levi,” and the lonely tire swing in his yard… 

• The final minutes of Rob-Will’s life are spent in truth. The 10-Petal, he tells Oreana, “eats what it loves and keeps the bones.” True! His daughter is the only not-crooked thing in their house – also true! – and the single good he ever did. It almost made us feel sorry for Rob-Will, his genuine love for Oreana, plus the way Jai Courtney and Natalie Alyn Lind play this scene. Almost. But it will be more like Rob-Won’t in Season 2 of Dutton Ranch, because we end the first installment with Rob-Will shot dead on the 10-P’s doorstep. Mariano got what he wanted. And the ranch keeps the bones.
