Though I had high hopes for the new Netflix shark movie Thrash, unfortunately it was nothing more than a pale imitation of Alexandre Aja’s well-crafted survivalist thriller, Crawl. In the face of Thrash‘s lackluster action and lazy script, I found myself marveling at how much better Crawl handled pretty much everything. The set-up is very similar: A Category 5 hurricane finds our leads trapped in a flooded crawl space, where they are attacked by vicious alligators. Sam Raimi produced, which perhaps explains why the action is fast-paced and fun, the characters are believable, and the kills are gleefully gore-y. Now that’s what I call a hurricane-survivor-monster-movie!
