‘Fallout’ Season 2 Finale: Kyle MacLachlan and Annabel O’Hagan Say They “Wonder How Many Wives Hank Actually Has” After That Shocker Twist

What to Watch

We never thought we’d be saying this about the Fallout Season 2 finale, but… mazel tov!

**Spoiler warning for Fallout Season 2 Episode 8, now streaming on Prime Video**

After watching Stephanie (Annabel O’Hagan) lie, cheat, and steal in Episode 7 in order to get to the U.S. — yes, on top of everything else, we find out that she’s CANADIAN — Episode 8 of the Prime Video adaptation gives viewers the revelation that she and Hank (Kyle McLachlan) were — or quite possibly still are — married.

“It was surprising,” MacLachlan told DECIDER in a Season 2 post-mort interview alongside O’Hagan. “I was like, ‘Okay, what the heck? I wonder how many wives Hank actually has. For me, I’m excited to find out, maybe there are more, we don’t know.”

To that, MacLachlan’s on-screen wife, O’Hagan, said, “It’s wild, Steph is at least on [marriage] three. Bert, and almost Chet, and Hank.”

In fact, Season 2 Episode 7, “The Handoff,” features Steph’s almost marriage to Chet (Dave Register), with whom she trapped in a relationship over the last two seasons, even naming her baby “Chet Jr.” despite him not being the father. The Season 2 finale, however, shows another love affair, Steph and Hank, as they celebrate their nuptials and encounter Cooper (Walton Goggins) and Barb (Frances Turner) on their way to their honeymoon.

For the actors behind the newlyweds — technically the oldy-weds as the show then jumps ahead 200-plus years to present-day wasteland — they couldn’t believe the twist that the Season 2 finale had in store, and what it could lead to for future seasons.

“It’s so fun getting these scripts because it’s always a surprise,” O’Hagan explained. “There’s always something that you’re not expecting, and this was a particularly pleasant one. Mostly because I was like, ‘I get to act with Kyle.’”

“I felt the same way,” MacLachlan said.

It’s a major left turn for their characters, who started off Season 1 as the best friend and father of Lucy (Ella Purnell), a pampered vault dweller whose whole life is turned upside down on her wedding day. It’s especially surprising for O’Hagan, who told DECIDER she had no clue what was in store when she signed onto the show all the way back at the beginning.

“I say that Steph is the gift that keeps on giving. I really auditioned for the show, thinking I was going to be in one scene, and it has become so much more than that. And I’m just really, really grateful for the opportunity to be on a show with so many actors and artists that I really just adore and I’m inspired by,” O’Hagan shared.

Even better, Season 2 has given her character a storyline similar to MacLachlan’s in Season 1, i.e. a heel turn towards the dark side. It’s just the cherry on top for the actress who thought she might be a one-and-done guest star in the show. How far we’ve come!

“I always hoped someday that I would get to play a character who is morally questionable, because I think those are those people — and they’re people who are just doing their best — trying to make up their own moral code for what they think is going to serve them, are just fascinating,” she said.

She added, “I’ve really just enjoyed learning all of the different layers of her. Bit by bit, and being surprised by a script and adapting along the way. Because we all adapt as people in our day-to-day lives. And why shouldn’t the character do the same?”

So, are they still legally married? Where does this put Hank’s relationship with Lucy’s mother — who he let die, by the way! And why were they just casually brushing past each other in the vault back in Season 1? These are questions that we’re dying to have answered in Season 3!
