Christmas might have come and gone already, but The Merchants of Joy remains a fascinating documentary worth checking out. Centered on the five families behind New York City’s Christmas tree corner shops, the film uncovers the year-long lead-up to the holiday season, and the grit required for this seasonal business that brings cheer to so many. Director Celia Aniskovich places heart and humanity at the forefront, with the brief, clever and Christmassy touch of claymation, channeling classic Rankin/Bass Christmas specials like Rudolph and The Year Without a Santa Claus.
