Ruby Rose Labels Sydney Sweeney “A Cretin” After ‘Christy’ Box Office Failure: “You Ruined The Film”
Ruby Rose is taking shots at Sydney Sweeney after her biopic of female boxer Christy Martin earned just $1.3 million in the box office, making it one of the worst opening weekends for a feature ever.
In a rant shared on Threads, Rose claimed Sweeney “ruined” Christy.
“The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing,” she wrote. “I was attached to play Cherry. Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It’s part of why I stayed in acting. Losing roles happens all the time.”
She went on to call out Sweeney’s PR team and seemingly criticized her politics. “For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS did it for the ‘people’. None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us. You’re a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better,” Rose wrote.
Decider reached out to Sweeney’s representatives for comment.
Directed by David Michôd, Christy stars Sweeney as the pro-boxer who became a boxing star in the ’90s. The film captures her rise to fame and the abuse she endured behind closed doors at the hands of her husband and coach, James V. Martin (Ben Foster).
The Batwoman actress may be referencing Sweeney’s recent statement addressing the film’s disappointing weekend in theaters, in which she claimed she doesn’t “just make art for numbers, we make it for impact.”

“I am so deeply proud of this movie,” Sweeney wrote on social media. “Proud of the film david made. proud of the story we told. proud to represent someone as strong and resilient as Christy Martin. this experience has been one of the greatest honors of my life. This film stands for survival, courage, and hope. through our campaigns, we’ve helped raise awareness for so many affected by domestic violence.”
“if christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded,” she wrote at another point of her statement. “So yes I’m proud. Why? because we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact. and christy has been the most impactful project of my life. thank you christy. i love you.”
Sweeney has been caught in a storm of backlash since starring in an American Eagle ad campaign that was criticized for its wordplay of “great genes” and “jeans,” prompting critics to compare it to eugenics. President Trump and Vice President Vance both spoke out in support of her, dubbing it the “hottest ad ever,” which Sweeney said was “surreal” in an interview with GQ.
The Euphoria actress has yet to publicly address the backlash. “I think that when I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear,” she told GQ.
Christy is playing now in theaters.
