‘Ballad of a Small Player’
Despite the less-than-favorable reviews from critics, I had a blast watching Colin Farrell sweat and struggle in Ballad of a Small Player, the new drama from Edward Berger now streaming on Netflix. Berger is fresh off an Oscar nomination for his 2024 film, Conclave, and he once again brings vibrant colors and melodrama to a film adaptation of the 2014 novel of the same name by Lawrence Osborne. Farrell stars as Lord Freddy Doyle, a gambling addict who has run out of luck, and is up to his eyeballs in debt. You won’t be able to tear your eyes away from him—especially when he effortlessly flips between a posh British voice and working-class Irish accent.
