On Today with Jenna & Friends, Bush Hager shared a clip of Monae talking to singer-songwriter Lucy Dacus. “I traveled back into the 1970s and I saw him do Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars and it was incredible,” Monae tells Dacus without blinking an eye.
“You traveled back…?” Dacus asks in the clip, seemingly seeking clarification.
Monae continues, “And I was like, ‘This is what I want to do.’ And so I jetted back into the 2000s.”
Both Bush Hager and Guthrie were confused by her confession, but they were certainly also intrigued.
“I’m not sure but I wanna have whatever she’s having,” Bush Hager announced. “I love Janelle! She’s been on our show, she is a queen. Maybe she has powers beyond our understanding.”

“The thing is she didn’t even have a twinkle in her eye or a wink. She’s literally like. ‘I time traveled, here’s my boarding pass to prove it,’” Guthrie noted. “She time traveled and I believe in her.”
The co-hosts then shared who they would go back in time to see. For Bush Hager, it was The Beatles, while Guthrie admitted she would want to take her “13 year old self to a Duran Duran concert.”
“They were on every inch of spare wall on my childhood bedroom,” Guthrie said.
But both Today hosts were interested in learning more about this alleged time traveling.
“Can we get Janelle Monae on the show so we can figure out how to time travel?” Bush Hager asked her Today stage crew. “Because it’s not a skill I have.”
“It’s not a skill,” Guthrie said, before asking the real hard-hitting questions: “And does she have that DeLorean from Back to the Future? Does she have some kind of vehicle that she time travels in? I’d like to know.”
